Drivers in Novi and Northville should prepare for the closure of Novi Road between Eight Mile and Allen roads beginning Sept. 15. The shutdown is expected to last through mid-November.
The Road Commission for Oakland County said in a press release the work marks the first phase of a major resurfacing project that will eventually extend north to Nine Mile Road.
Crews will pause for the winter, reopening the road before continuing construction in spring 2026.
The first phase of work will include reconstruction of the curved section south of Allen Road. During this phase, traffic will be detoured along Eight Mile Road to Meadowbrook Road to Nine Mile Road, and back to Novi Road.
When the project resumes in 2026, Novi Road between Eight Mile and Nine Mile will close to northbound traffic only.
Southbound lanes will remain open, with a detour for northbound drivers routed along Eight Mile Road to Beck Road to Ten Mile Road. Work is escheduled for completion in summer 2026.
The $6.9 million project is funded largely through federal dollars, the road commission said, with additional support from the road commission, the cities of Novi and Northville, and Oakland County’s Tri-Party Program.
Planned improvements include pavement reconstruction and repaving, new drainage systems, ADA-compliant pedestrian crosswalks, storm sewer installation, upgraded signage and striping, a continuous center left-turn lane, additional travel lanes north of Allen Road, and a pedestrian-activated HAWK beacon north of Galway Street.
The section of Novi Road carries about 13,700 vehicles daily, RCOC said.
