National Weather Service rules out a tornado for Cheboygan County after storm

CHEBOYGAN — The severe weather that rumbled through Cheboygan County on Thursday, July 24 did not include a tornado, according to the National Weather Service.

“We did go back out today (Friday) and survey the area southwest of Cheboygan near Riggsville Road and over by Douglas Lake. We were not able to find any evidence that a tornado touched down,” said Dan Cornish, a staff meteorologist with the weather service in Gaylord.

“From what we saw, we don’t believe that a tornado touched down and any damage from yesterday’s storms was related to strong wind gusts and thunderstorms,” he added.

Thursday’s weather produced local reports of some downed trees and power lines.
