MSU's Aidan Chiles listed as bottom half Big Ten QB in USA TODAY Sports' rankings

Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports is not particularly high on the Spartans starting quarterback as we approach the 2025 season.

Myerberg has released his rankings of all the Big Ten quarterbacks as we inch closer to the 2025 season, and he has Aidan Chiles in the bottom half of the league. Myerberg had Chiles ranked at No. 12 in the Big Ten — which was notably behind a number of first time starters at their new schools, including Oregon’s Dante Moore (No. 4), Ohio State’s Julian Sayin (No. 5), UCLA’s Nico Iamaleava (No. 6), Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza (No. 7), Michigan’s Bryce Underwood (No. 9), Iowa’s Mark Gronowski (No. 10) and Washington’s Demond Williams Jr. (No. 11).

Here’s what Myerberg had to say about Chiles:

“Things didn’t exactly go smoothly for Chiles after following former Oregon State coach Johnathan Smith to East Lansing. But the junior did cut down on his turnovers in the second half of the season after a rough start and showed flashes of the dual-threat athleticism that makes him such an interesting prospect, most notably in totaling over 300 yards of total offense in a win against Iowa.”

Chiles had an up-and-down first year as a starter at Michigan State last season, which I certainly agree with Myerberg on. But the overall ranking seems low to me when you consider the number of quarterbacks that are starting for the first time at their Big Ten school this year. All bias aside, I personally wouldn’t trade Chiles for a former FCS quarterback or true freshman — not at least for the upcoming specific season.

Chiles and the Spartans will have their opportunity to show he belongs in the upper half of the Big Ten, starting next month. Michigan State kicks off the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan, with kickoff from Spartan Stadium scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
