MSU hockey's Trey Augustine, Porter Martone sign NHL contracts with Red Wings, Flyers

Michigan State junior goaltender Trey Augustine signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday, March 31, after the Spartans’ run in the NCAA Tournament came to an end this past Saturday.

Augustine, who was selected by Detroit in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft, will report to the team’s AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids for the remainder of this season on an ATO (amateur tryout) before his contract kicks in at the start of the 2026-2027 season.

Augustine, who is one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award and one of three finalists for the Mike Richter Award, given to the nation’s top goaltender, put together his best season in his third year with the Spartans. Augustine went 24-9-1 in 34 starts with a .929 save percentage and allowed just 2.11 goals against per game.

Augustine was the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year for the second straight season.

In addition to Augustine, MSU freshman forward Porter Martone signed a three-year entry-level deal with the Philadelphia Flyers, who selected him sixth overall in the 2025 NHL Draft. Martone was MSU’s points leader with 25 goals and 25 assists in 35 games.

Martone, a First Team All-Big Ten selection in his lone year in East Lansing, will make his NHL debut with the Flyers Tuesday night against the Washington Capitals.

“One thing I’d like to say is how thankful we are to Michigan State,” Philadelphia Flyers GM Daniel Briere told reporters, “the coaching staff, his teammates there, how Porter embraced the role of going there and also how much he developed this year, we give Michigan State a lot of credit for that. The whole (Flyers’) staff was really impressed with what they did with what they did with Porter, and we think he’s pretty close to being ready to play in the NHL.”
