Monroe County Region varsity high school sports roundup for May 16

ADRIAN — Monroe County Region girls made their mark.

Eight events in the Division 3 track and field regional at Adrian were ruled by Region athletes on Saturday, May 16.

Half of those titles were claimed by two girls.

Ida’s Julia Hughes swept the hurdles going :14.76 in the highs and 46.12 in the lows and Giuliana Nastale of Erie Mason was the champion in the 100 (:12.28) and 200 (:25.58) dashes.

Olivia Beaudrie of St. Mary Catholic Central won the high jump at 5-2 and ran with Angie Illes, Katelyn Boberg and Adela Illes on the winning 4×100 relay (:50.28).

Mason’s Paige Konrad went a season-best 17-1.5 to win the long jump and Addyson Wilt of Ida topped the discus at 111-2.

Ida finished 8.5 points behind champion Blissfield in the girls team standings with 103.5 points.

SMCC’s Bella LaFountain was second in both the 800 and 1,600.

Also taking runner-up honors were Alayna Markey (shot-put) and Madelynn Roderick (long jump) of Ida, Brielle White (400) and Nina Bauman (discus), Adela Illes (100) of SMCC, Erie Mason’s 4×200 relay of Adrianna Cosby, Aubrey Iocoangeli, Konrad and Nastale, Whiteford’s 4×400 relay of White, Sierra DeBarr, Braelynn Chiotti and Briar Wing and Whiteford’s 4×800 relay of Briar Wing, Breslin Wing, DeBarr and Chiotti.

Three Region boys recorded personal bests in winning events.

SMCC’s Christian Craanen went 1:59.64 in the 800, Mason’s Lincoln Murbach :39.72 in the low hurdles and Whiteford’s Brek Ruddy a school-record 14-4 in the pole vault.

SMCC won the 4×100 relay with Cole Reinhardt, Gavin Swartout, Vince Harris, Brady Reinhardt (:42.41) and the 4×200 relay with Brady Reinhardt, Carson Welker, Easton Kwiatkowski and Harris (1:30.01).

Taking second in the boys meet were Swartout (100), Ida’s Brandon Tross (pole vault), Whiteford’s Jess Saylor (400) and Whiteford’s 4×400 relay of Nate Andrews, Brek Ruddy, Brody Hillard and Saylor in a school-record 3:27.1.

“Man, what a competitive region we had this year,” Whiteford coach Jay Yockey said. “We really had a fantastic day. I’m excited to know that we have six boys and six girls going to state.”

SATURDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS

BASEBALL

Nick Pudlowski, Bedford: The sophomore threw a perfect game to beat Summerfield 1-0. “He threw Thursday and had a kind of rough outing,” Bedford coach Craig Trychel said. “I thought I would give him a shot today and see if he would bounce back. He did a great job.” Keagan Dixon drove in the only run of the game in the first inning. Dixon was 3-for-4, drove in two runs and scored three as Bedford took the second game 11-1. Jason Bryant drove in three runs with a pair of hits and Griffin Bush also logged two hits. A home run by Jude Flowers produced Summerfield’s only run of the day. Flowers and Reece Kalb pitched well in the first game for the 11-7 Bulldogs.

Grant Potcova, SMCC: The freshman earned his first varsity victory, throwing just 65 pitches in an 8-1 win over Sand Creek. He also helped his own cause by driving in three runs. Lukas Linzell went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs. The Falcons also beat Vandercook Lane 12-1 as Mac Barno, Blake Lechy, and Andrew Strzelewicz drove in two runs each to support the pitching of Ryan Hayden. “We were able to get contributions from all 17 members of the team today. We have had a lot of our bench kids working hard in practice, and they were able to be rewarded today with their hard work.”

Connor Rankin, Gibraltar Carlson: Went 6-for-8 to lead the Marauders to a 5-3, 9-3 sweep of Flat Rock. Brady Wilkins collected two hits in each game. Mason Szozda ripped a two-run triple in the second game and winning pitcher Keith Salisbury had two hits. Nick Hodge drove in three runs for Flat Rock.

Grant Pfeiffer, Ida: Scored four times and drove in two runs while going 3-for-4 in a 19-3 win over Arcadia. Grant Pfeiffer, Cam Riggs, Landon Alberts and Luke Hennessey added two hits each. Riggs, Trent Pfeiffer and Hazen Vogt had two hits each in a 7-4 triumph over Elida earlier in the day. Ida improved to 23-6

SOFTBALL

Aly Lewis and Soffia Elmer, Monroe: Racked up three hits each in a 5-3 win over Grass Lake, the No. 3 team in Division 3. Delaynee Miller added a pair of hits to support the 5-hit pitching of Olivia McMahon. The Trojans dropped the second game 16-11 despite home runs by Elmer, Lewis and Sierra Daniels.
