MSP probes possible shooting on I-96 in Livonia

Michigan State Police are investigating a possible shooting reported this week on Interstate 96 between Middlebelt and Inkster roads in Livonia.

Dispatchers received a call at about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday reporting possible gunfire that happened on I-96, according to authorities.

Officials said troopers located the caller on the shoulder of east I-96 near Outer Drive. She was not injured, MSP said.

The woman told police she had turned right onto the eastbound I-96 service drive from Farmington Road at the same time that another vehicle made an illegal right turn. The woman reported she braked to avoid crashing into the other vehicle on the service drive, investigators said.

She then merged onto the freeway and made her way to its far left lane, according to MSP. Troopers said the victim told them the driver of the second vehicle was traveling behind her, accelerated to match the woman’s speed, pulled up alongside her in the left center lane, and she heard several shots.

Police said they inspected her vehicle and found no evidence rounds struck it.

“Troopers are continuing to investigate the incident,” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said on X. “While no one was hit by these rounds, it is ridiculous that we continue to see people try to settle a traffic dispute with a gun.”

Anyone with information about the incident should call the Michigan State Police at 1-855-MICH-TIP or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

Other freeway shootings in Metro Detroit have sparked probes in recent months.

Last month, a motorist was injured in a weekend shooting on Interstate 96 near the Southfield Freeway.

In January, Michigan State Police investigated a possible New Year’s Eve shooting on Interstate 75 near Grand River Avenue in Detroit.

The month before that, state police investigated a rollover crash and gunshot on westbound I-96 near the Southfield Freeway.
