Monroe man charged after dog found dead in hot car

A Monroe man is being charged with killing an animal after his dog was found dead inside his hot vehicle.

Marc Dunbar, 34, was arrested on June 11 after police officers responded to the 800 block of Smith Street in Monroe for an animal welfare complaint. Upon arrival, officers located the dead dog inside a park vehicle.

Dunbar was arraigned on June 12 for one count of killing or torturing an animal and his bond was posted at $2,500. He is set to appear before Judge Christian Horkey’s on June 25 for a probable cause conference, and again on June 30 for a preliminary examination.

The investigation determined the dog had been left unattended inside the locked vehicle for an extended period of time and died as a result. Officers identified the dog’s owner, who they said knowingly left the animal inside the vehicle, the Monroe Public Safety Department has said.

Dunbar’s attorney, Ben Gonek, could not be reached for comment.
