NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron softball coach Tedi Belisle says her team has some power.
But the Chiefs haven’t shown it much this season.
That changed when two homers powered Huron to 12-2 victory over Jefferson on Wednesday, May 13.
“We’re not a super powerhouse, but we have some home run power,” Belisle said.
A wind blowing out to left field helped hitters on both sides.
Jefferson’s Emily Grube connected on a two-run homer in the top of the first inning to give her team an early 2-0 lead.
That didn’t last long as Madison Kuzara got on base to start Huron’s half of the inning and Addison Ramsby drilled a ball over the left-centerfield fence to almost the identical spot as Grube’s blast.
“That built the confidence,” Belisle said. “We for sure were not happy about that start. To tie it up in the next inning gave up momentum.”
Pender’s first homer of the season, also a two-run shot, put Huron in command.
Ramsby went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs.
Catherine Shore and Maya Martindale both finished 3-for-3 and Pender and Miranda Laho added two hits each.
Huron squared its record at 7-7.
“We haven’t played a lot of games,” Belisle said.

SOFTBALL
Alayna McDaniel, Airport: Drove in three runs with two hits to spark a 14-1 win over Milan. Brooklyn Martin tossed a 4-hitter, Olivia Tilley scored four times and Brenna Baker and Kennady Kroll each had a pair of hits.
Kaitlyn Kwiatkowski, Bedford: Went 5-for-6 and stole four bases in a doubleheader against Tecumseh. Bedford lost the first game 9-2 and won the second 12-2. Sophia Steinman, Lily Vidra and May Smithson recorded two hits each in the second game to support 3-hit pitching from Paige Bock.
Abby Marek, Dundee: Went 3-for-3, drove in two runs and scored twice in a 13-0 win over Britton Deerfield. The 5-16-1 Vikings stretched their winning streak to three games as Addison Cusac, Brynn Cusac and Annalyse Lay combined to throw a shutout. Lay, Addison Cusac, Madison Cousino and Ella Rath logged two hits apiece.
BASEBALL
Jason Bryant, Bedford: Drive in three runs in a 10-5 triumph over Ann Arbor Skyline. Bryant delivered two hits along with Brody Leonhard and Hudson Heams.
TUESDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS
BASEBALL
Grant Pfeiffer, Ida: Recorded two hits in each game of a 12-2, 14-3 sweep of Hillsdale that pushed the Blue Streaks to 19-6 overall and 14-3 in the Lenawee County Athletic Association. Hunter Hemelgarn and Owen Snyder earned the pitching wins.
Angelo Graves, Dundee: Went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs in a 5-4 loss to Onsted. The Vikings dropped the first game 5-2 with Travyn Vajcner picking up their only hit.
SOFTBALL
Madison Cousino, Dundee: Scored seven times, collected four hits and stole three bases in a 9-0, 12-7 sweep of Onsted that gave the 4-16-1 Vikings their first two Lenawee County Athletic Association wins of the season. Ella Rath and Annalyse Lay finished with five hits each and pitching wins went to Addison Cusac and Lay. Other offensive standouts were Lydia Homrich, Abby Marek, Brynn Cusac and Juliet Rouse.
Alli Schrader, Ida: Sparked an 8-4, 13-1 sweep of Hillsdale by going 5-for-6 and scoring five runs. Adisyn Swiderski went 3-for-3 and Emily Lambert 2-for-3 in the second game.
BOYS LACROSSE
Max Flint, SMCC: His sixth goal of the game was the game winner in overtime that gave the Falcons an 8-7 win. Brenton Carter finished with two goals and five assists. Other assists went to Tyler St. Pierre and Christian Craanen.
BOYS GOLF
Samuel Mitocariu and Landon McGregor, Airport: Both carded 37 to lead a 152-160 win over Flat Rock. Brayden Siders and Cade Horner both shot 39 for the Jets. Juel Scully’s 40 was the best score for Flat Rock.
Jacob Darin, New Boston Huron: Took medalist honors with a 39 during a 167-228 victory over Riverview. The Chiefs mounted a balanced attack with Landen Campbell shooting 42 and Brendyn Raschke and Kourtland Waid checking in at 43.
Ben Peer, Jefferson: Led his team with a 45 during a 162-203 loss to Grosse Ile at Water’s Edge. Jackson Vallie shot 46 for the Bears.
