Monroe County Region high school sports roundup Feb. 5-7

OTTAWA LAKE — Whiteford’s boys basketball team was trailing in the second quarter.

Then the Bobcats shifted into another gear with a 25-0 run over 10 minutes of action to pull away for a 60-49 win over Erie Mason on Saturday, Feb. 7.

“We called a timeout and talked about picking up our intensity and effort and the boys responded well,” Whiteford coach Jordan Bollin said.

Theo Joerin got things started with a triple, Caden Schroyer beat the first half buzzer with a 3-pointer to make it 29-17 going into the break.

A 3-pointer by Drew Ruddy and back-to-back buckets by Nate Andrews put the Bobcats in front 39-17 before Mason scored again.

Andrews finished with 13 points, Cole Griffith 12 and Joerin 10 for 15-3 Whiteford.

Mason (10-9) got 15 points from David Sweeney and 14 from Logan Doom.

“We struggled to deal with Whiteford’s physicality,” Mason coach Isaac Skaggs said. “We made a bit of a run at them in the 4th quarter, but for too much of the game we just didn’t meet their force.”

Whiteford holds off Milan

MILAN — Milan made a strong bid for its first win of the season with 19 points in the fourth quarter, but Whiteford held on for a 48-42 victory Saturday.

“Milan has a really solid young team that will continue to develop and improve,” Whiteford coach Nick Kopp said. “I want to give lots of credit to Emily Bladen. One of the best players in the area.”

Bladen scored 16 points for the 0-16 Big Reds.

The top scorer in the game was Whiteford’s Avy Wood with 20.

“Our girls played a great game,” Kopp said of his 4-12 team. “Very proud of Glory Speweik for her defense she played on Bladen. I’m also very proud of Avy Wood. The kid does everything I ask and then some.”

Bedford shut down

SLYVANIA, Ohio — Bedford had it’s three-game winning streak snapped with a 38-24 loss to Sylvania Northview Saturday.

“We hung with them in the first half,” Bedford coach Bill Ryan said. “There are some things to be proud of, but they are a very good team.”

Anna Gray led the 9-5 Mules with 14 points and freshman Londyn Sibert was a point shy of the career-high she set Friday with 7.

BOYS BASKETBALL

State Line bows out

HAMMOND, Ind. — State Line Christian, playing without leading scorer Jackson Baumker because of a broken finger, bowed out of the Hammond Baptist Tournament with a 57-54 overtime loss to Calumet Christian Friday.

Preston Roque scored 20 points and Austin Nowak 17 for 13-7 State Line.

Milan swims past Dundee

MILAN — Milan posted its second win of the week, clipping Dundee 102-78 Thursday.

“We won seven events on the night, but our depth was what really shined,” Milan coach Dan Heikka said.

Milan swept the relays with Alec Markham, Cameron Garcia, Tadas Zukovskis, Koleton Tolfree, Jameson McShane and Dylan Nichols.

Zukovskis took first in the butterfly and breaststroke to go along with two relay wins.

Other individual victories came from Garcia (200) and Nichols (100).

Dundee’s JR Hess rules the 50 and 100 freestyles while Around Brewer ruled diving, Chandler Gossiaux the individual medley and Sebastian West the 500.

Mason suffers first loss

RIVERVIEW — David Mills pool record in the 500-yard freestyle and nearly set another in the 200, but Erie Mason-Ida fell 100-80 for its first dual-meet loss of the season Thursday.

Brandon Tross won the butterfly and Brenner Nelson, Jared Tunison, Mason Reynolds, Bowie Jacobs, Cameron Cogan, Tanner Heiden and Blake Bushroe turned in strong performances.

Hay, Adams win for Monroe

ANN ARBOR — Jayce Hay won the breaststroke and Alec Adams took the 200-yard freestyle in season-best times for Monroe during a 115-70 loss to Ann Arbor Huron Thursday.

“We really looked great out there,” Monroe coach Erin Dowen said of her 5-6 team.

Landon Lee, Jad Alabdalla, Leandro Alcantara, Victor LeBrun and Mason Lambert also swam well.

Keith, Cain double up

GIBRALTAR — Owen Keith (50-yard freestyle, butterfly) and Dylan Cain (200, 500) were double winners for Gibraltar Carlson during a 99-62 victory over Dearborn Edsel Ford Thursday.The Marauders also got individual wins from Jace Starll (diving) and Conor Raftery (individual medley) and swept the relays.

PREP WRESTLING

Clarkson clips Bedford

TEMPERANCE — Two of the top teams in Division 1 met at Bedford with No. 4 Clarkston beating the No. 8 Mules 40-23.

Cody Duvendack (120) and Caden Merritt (157) had pins for Bedford. Nolan King (138) and Zach Miracle (190) delivered major decisions and Maxim Benore (126) won.

PREP BOWLING

Huron chases down Bears

MONROE — Jefferson got off to a fast start by winning the first Baker game, but New Boston Huron came back for an 18-12 win at Monroe Sport Center.

Hunter Wyszynski sparked the comeback with games of 268 and 208.

Airport’s boys remained undefeated as Brayden Siders shot games of 204 and 200 in a 27.5-2.5 win over Riverview and St. Mary Catholic Central got a 245 from A.J. Duran in a 26-4 triumph over Flat Rock.

Flat Rock’s girls remained unbeaten as Camryn Clish shot 208 in a 25-5 win over SMCC.

In other girls action, Clohe Rachell and Angel Sly led Huron past Jefferson 17-13 and Airport handled Riverview 23-7 behind games of 220 and 192 by Abby Hill.

Bedford sweeps Monroe

MONROE — Bedford swept Monroe Thursday as the boys pulled out a 15.5-14.5 win and the girls notched a 19-11 win.
