The U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service intercepted a dreamcatcher at the Detroit Metro Airport that included monkey and python bones, officials announced on Monday, May 18.
According to the CBP Detroit Field office Director Marty C. Raybon, airport security took the dreamcatcher containing protected animal parts from a traveler.
“These are both protected species that require permits — dead or alive,” Raybon said.
The post on X did not include details about where the traveler was coming from or the item that was confiscated.
The CBP is responsible for enforcing hundreds of laws for 40 government agencies pertaining to restrictions on what passengers can bring into the U.S., including cultural artifacts and property, among other items. Even if purchased from a business in the country of origin or in another country, legal ownership of such artifacts may be in question if brought into the U.S.
