Michigan’s 4th Congressional District Democratic primary gives voters in the southwest corner of the state a choice between the two wings of the party.
State Sen. Sean McCann is a traditional Democrat who looks at issues through a progressive lens, but is more interested in reforming the political system than tearing it down.
Diop Harris II is one of several Democratic congressional candidates this cycle who identify as socialists and are calling for radical change in the way America works.
McCann is a former Kalamazoo City Commissioner who counts expanding access to health care as one of his major accomplishments in the Legislature.
In Washington, he says he would extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits and work to lower prescription drug prices. McCann advocates for building out green energy infrastructure and would also focus on protecting the Great Lakes — the district borders on Lake Michigan.
McCann would prioritize the needs of farmers, he says, and work to find new markets for their crops.
Harris is a community activist from Battle Creek. He supports Medicare-for-all, which would be paid for with much higher taxes on the wealthy.
Harris started his political career as an aide to former Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown.
He stresses his Native American heritage and says in Congress he would work for fairer treatment and greater autonomy for tribes.
He says the 2008 financial crisis pushed him into working for greater accountability in the country’s financial system.
We believe Sean McCann is a better fit for the 4th District, and he gets our endorsement in the Democratic primary.
