Michigan State hockey responded from a disappointing season-opening loss on Thursday to dominate New Hampshire on Friday evening for their first win of the year.
The Spartans smothered the Wildcats en route to a 2-0 win to earn their first victory of the 2025-26 season. The score itself wasn’t suggestive of a dominant win, but the pace of the game and shots on goal — a 38-13 advantage in favor of Michigan State — says otherwise.
The game was tied at 0-0 through most of the first two periods, but eventually Michigan State broke through with a snipe from captain Matt Basgall late in the second period. That goal gave the Spartans the 1-0 lead heading into the final period.
Michigan State would pick up an insurance goal less than three minutes into the third period thanks to a nice shot from Patrick Geary to gain a 2-0 lead they’d never surrender.
Both Charlie Stramel and Porter Martone finished the game with a pair of assists, with Stramel earning the first star in the game. Spartans goaltender Trey Augustine picked up the shutout with relative ease.
Michigan State improves to 1-1-0 on the season after picking up an opening series split with New Hampshire. Next up for the Spartans is a road trip to top 10 Boston University next week.
