Michigan House is engaged on university accountability | Letter

The Detroit News is right about one thing: Michigan’s public universities need greater accountability. But the assertion that the Michigan House has not been engaged on the issue is laughable.

Since taking majority in January of 2025, House Republicans have been examining university spending, questioning administrative decisions, conducting oversight hearings and developing reforms aimed at restoring transparency and accountability while improving affordability. These efforts began because Michigan students and parents deserve better. And they deserve answers.

Public universities receive significant taxpayer funding and play a critical role in preparing the next generation. That responsibility demands accountability. When concerns arise about spending priorities, burgeoning administration, or whether institutions are staying focused on their educational mission, it is the duty of lawmakers to ask questions and pursue reforms. That is exactly what we have been doing.

Somehow, university reform became a partisan issue. While there was broad agreement that greater transparency and accountability are worthwhile goals, there was not enough agreement on how to achieve them. As a result, reform efforts that could have moved the conversation forward failed to gain the bipartisan support necessary to become law.

That does not mean the issue has gone away, nor does it mean the House has been disengaged.

Meaningful reform requires oversight, investigation and a willingness to challenge institutions that have grown accustomed to operating without sufficient scrutiny. It also requires building proposals that can survive legal, financial and practical realities.

Readers should know that this is and has been a priority in the House, and substantial work has already been done. The challenge was not a lack of attention. It was a lack of political will from the Democrats to fight against special interests and join us.

Legislatures can disagree about the best path forward. What should not be overlooked, however, is the significant work already undertaken to examine university governance and identify opportunities for improvement. This issue has been a priority for House Republicans, and it will remain one.

Universities should be transparent, accountable, and focused on education while creating affordable opportunities for students. We intend to keep working toward that goal, just like we have been for months.

Rep. Bryan Posthumus
