Michigan commits 'coaching malpractice' at end of half as Nebraska pulls off Hail Mary

Nebraska pulled off the impossible on the final play of the half Saturday against Michigan football.

Quarterback Dylan Raiola heaved a Hail Mary pass from just beyond midfield that was caught at the goal line by receiver Jacory Barney Jr. for a 52-yard touchdown, turning a 17-10 Wolverines lead into a tie game at halftime in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Clock management by both teams was questionable.

The Cornhuskers played it safe early in the down and were booed at home by fans just before the miracle score.

Michigan coach Biff Poggi, acting as head coach in place of the suspended Sherrone Moore, then didn’t call a timeout on fourth-and-11, allowing the clock to run down to 1 second and giving Nebraska no risk in calling a timeout, then attempting a fourth-down heave on the half’s final play.

Ex-college football coach Rick Neuheisel, part of CBS’ halftime show, called it “coaching malpractice” from the Wolverines for not calling timeout to force the Cornhuskers to punt.
