An annual unsanctioned gathering of boaters on Lake St. Clair turned disorderly and violent this weekend, landing one person behind bars, authorities said Monday.
The Muscamoot Bay Raft-Off brings thousands of boats to the bay, where revelers are known to drop anchor, socialize, swim and party on the water all day, according to the Mascamoot Bay website.
Salem Asmar, 26, of Shelby Township.
Asmar was arriagned Monday in 72nd District Court in Marine City on a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm. His bond was set at $100,000
Online court records do not list an attorney who could comment on Asmar’s behalf.
A probable cause for Asmar is slated for 9 a.m. Aug. 19. If convicted as charged, he could spend up to 10 years in prison.
An individual was expected to be charged Monday in connection with a stabbing during last weekend’s “Raft Off” on Lake St. Clair, officials confirmed.
A fight on Lake St. Clair at Muskamoot Bay on Saturday resulted in a 21-year-old man being stabbed in the back, Erika Hrynyk, the public information officer for the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, told The Detroit News.
The 21-year-old declined medical treatment at the scene, she said.
The suspect was expected to be arraigned Monday, Hrynyk said.
Authorities were slated to release more details after the arraignment.
The stabbing occurred during “Raft Off,” an annual event that draws thousands of boaters to Lake St. Clair.
Officials said it started as a one-day gathering and expanded into a multiday party for boaters and campers.
Ahead of the event, sheriff’s officials urged attendees to prioritize water safety, citing risks that increase with the size and duration of the gathering.
