WESTPHALIA TWP. – A 50-year-old man and a 5-year-old girl died Jan. 21 after the side-by-side they were riding in broke through the ice on a private pond.
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched about 5:20 p.m. to the 9000 block of Clintonia Road, east of Portland and south of Westphalia.

Eric Miles, 50, and the girl were pulled from the pond and taken to the University of Michigan-Sparrow hospital, but died from their injuries, the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office said it would not be releasing the girl’s name.
The Westphalia Township and Portland fire departments, Portland and DeWitt Township police departments, Michigan State Police, Portland Ambulance and Capital Area Dive Team all assisted at the scene.
