A man is behind bars, accused of fatally shooting a school janitor outside the eastside Detroit school building where the janitor worked.
Kevin Flagg, 43, of Detroit is charged in the death of 25-year-old Devin Burns, also of Detroit, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy announced Tuesday in a press release. Flagg is accused of shooting Burns outside of Chrysler Elementary School, in the 1400 block of East Lafayette Street, after an argument escalated to a physical fight.
At about 5:17 p.m. July 2, Detroit police were dispatched to the school after receiving a report of a shooting, Worthy said. At the scene, officers found Burns on the ground, having suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.
Burns was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
Burns had worked at the school for five years and was regarded by students and staff and being friendly and kind, according to a WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) report.
Flagg has been charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and two counts of felony firearm.
He was arraigned Saturday in Detroit’s 36th District Court, where Magistrate Laura Echartea set his bond at $250,000. During a hearing Monday, his bond was lowered to $150,000, online court records show. As of Tuesday, he remained at the Wayne County Jail, according to online jail records.
During his arraignment, Flagg stood mute and a plea of not guilty was entered by the court on his behalf, records show. A probable cause conference is slated for July 20.
His court-appointed attorney, Tiffany Howell, didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.
If convicted of second-degree murder, Flagg could be sentenced to any number of years in prison, including a life sentence.
