A Macomb County man thought he’d won $5,000 on a Michigan Lottery instant ticket, but quickly realized his prize was much larger.
The 60-year-old man, who chose to remain anonymous, recently won $1 million on a King Cashword ticket, according to the Michigan Lottery.
“I bought my ticket out of a self-serve machine and scratched it off,” the man told the Michigan Lottery. “At first, I thought I won $5,000, and then I found another word to make 10 for a $1 million prize. It was awesome! Winning feels like a huge blessing and means I can retire earlier than I planned.”
His $20 ticket was purchased at a self-serve machine at the Kroger store located at 16450 25 Mile Road in Macomb.
He recently claimed his prize and opted to receive a one-time lump sum payment of about $693,000 instead of annuity payments for the full amount.
He plans to save the money for retirement.
The King Cashword game launched in June 2025 with three top prizes of $1 million. Two of those prizes remain unclaimed.
