The Lansing area is lacking a Sonic, according to the majority of votes in a State Journal poll asking which restaurant chain people want to see locally.
More than 18% of the votes cast in the poll, open June 23-25, were for the Oklahoma City-based chain.
Sonic, founded in 1952, offers everything from burgers and hot dogs to ice cream and slushies. There are more than 3,000 locations in the U.S. Over the years many Lansing area residents have voiced support for a location here, but so far it hasn’t happened.
The State Journal poll collected votes for restaurant chains the area currently lacks from a listing of 11 different companies. Among them was Sonic, Jack in the Box, Waffle House, In-N-Out Burger, Chi Chi’s, The Cheesecake Factory, Zaxbys, Del Taco, Krispy Kreme, White Castle and Portillo’s. Readers also had the option of listing their own choice.
The Cheesecake Factory was a close second in the poll, garnering 17.48% of the votes. The chain is known for its desserts but also offers a full menu as well. The company operates more than 350 locations today in the U.S. and Canada. Two are in Michigan, in Novi and Kentwood.
California-based In-N-Out Burger came in third place with 13.18% of the vote. Portillo’s was next with 12.89% of the vote and Waffle House came in fifth place with 10.6%.

Some readers voted for chains that weren’t listed. There were nods for Cava, Bonefish Grill, Schlotzsky’s Deli and Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers.
