University of Michigan raises tuition for students amid cost pressures

The University of Michigan will raise tuition and fees for in-state students by 3% for the 2026-27 academic year as it faces uncertainty over state and federal funding and navigates cost pressures.

Tuition and fees for out-of-state students and most graduate programs will rise 4.9% under a new budget approved unanimously by the Board of Regents on Thursday, June 25.

“This proposed balanced budget reflects disciplined stewardship in a challenging environment,” Provost Laurie McCauley said at the meeting. “It protects our most financially vulnerable students, invests strategically in our academic and research mission and positions the university to remain resilient as external conditions continue to evolve.”

Tuition and fees for most in-state undergraduate students in their freshman or sophomore year will rise from $18,346 a year to $18,896 starting in the fall.

Last year, U-M raised tuition and fees for in-state students by 3.4%.

In response to pressures including an expected flat state appropriation, a reduction in federal funding for research and cost pressures such as rising prices for insurance, utility and health care benefits, U-M identified more than $38 million in cost savings for the fiscal year 2027, according to the U-M budget proposal.

The budget includes a $12.3 million increase in undergraduate financial aid (up 3.8% compared with last year), which U-M said is designed to offset the tuition and fees increase for resident undergraduates in financial need.

Tuition for incoming freshmen at Michigan State University, meanwhile, will increase by 4.37%. The MSU Board of Trustees earlier this month approved a flat rate tuition cost increase from $16,916 to $17,656 per year for in-state first-year undergraduate students.

Wayne State University’s Board of Governors approved a tuition increase of 4% on June 25.
