Local man pleads guilty after alleged 'rampage' at Holland Walmart in March

A local man charged with doing thousands of dollars in damage to the Holland Walmart during a “rampage” in March has pled guilty, according to reporting from The Grand Haven Tribune.

Gavin Love, 25, of Grand Haven Township, faces one charge of malicious destruction of property ($1,000-$20,000) as a habitual offender, third offense.

His bond was set at $50,000 cash/surety, and he remains in custody at the Ottawa County Jail. Love will face sentencing Aug. 11 under Judge Jon Hulsing in Ottawa County’s 20th Circuit Court.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Love entered the business and began pulling televisions down and destroying them. Police said he then obtained a metal pole and struck other items in the store, including products on the shelves and “numerous glass doors” on display cases and coolers.

According to Michigan’s Offender Tracking Information System, Love was already on probation for unlawful use of a motor vehicle and assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer in November 2024. His probation began Feb. 3, and was scheduled to end in 2028.

Malicious destruction of property between $1,000 and $20,000 carries a maximum sentence of five years and/or a fine of no more than $10,000 or three times the amount of the destruction, whichever is greater, according to state law. However, as a third offense habitual offender, Love could face up to 50% more than the maximum sentence.
