LIVONIA — A person who walked into the Livonia police department lobby and told police he was having a mental health crisis stabbed a Livonia police officer on April 3.
Police said in a release both the subject who stabbed the officer and the officer were treated at a local hospital. The suspect, whose age was not provided, was treated for minor injuries and was expected to receive a psychological evaluation. The police officer was treated for his injuries and is in stable condition.
Around 9:07 a.m., “a subject entered the lobby of the Livonia Police Department, displayed a knife and made statements indicating he was in some sort of mental health crisis, while becoming aggressive toward officers,” police said.
Officers, along with the department’s crisis clinician, tried to de-escalate the situation.
“However, those efforts were unsuccessful,” police said. “Officers deployed a Taser which was ineffective. After further Taser deployments, the subject ultimately fell to the ground and officers began taking him into custody.”
During the struggle, the suspect stabbed the officer in the leg, police. An officer who had his gun drawn was kicked by the suspect. Police said that led to an accidental discharge of one round, but no one was struck.
An investigation is ongoing.
