Lions re-sign versatile Avonte Maddox to help depleted secondary

Last year, Avonte Maddox returned to the Motor City and joined his hometown team’s quest to win its first Super Bowl. Now, he’s back with the Detroit Lions to continue that pursuit.

The veteran defensive back re-signed Monday, April 6, the organization announced. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Maddox, a Detroit King alum, appeared in 14 games and made three starts in 2025, serving as a valuable depth piece for a secondary that became depleted last fall following a series of injuries that sidelined cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and D.J. Reed as well as safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch. The versatile Maddox mainly floated between the slot position and the back line of the defense.

Over 342 defensive snaps, Maddox contributed 32 tackles, forced a fumble, secured an interception and made four pass breakups.

The 30-year-old, who played his first seven NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, will further buttress a sector the Lions have tried to fortify over the past month given the uncertainty surrounding the availability of Branch and Joseph. Branch suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in December and Joseph is dealing with a serious cartilage issue in his knee that cut his season short last October.

Since the free agency period began in March, the Lions have added defensive back Christian Izien and cornerback Roger McCreary, who has experience playing both inside and outside. They also re-signed Rock Ya-Sin, a top reserve.
