Le'Anna Zavala makes history with 100th win, 10 girls advance to wrestling regionals

The Holland-area girls wrestling teams competed at individual districts on Sunday, Feb. 25, at Hastings, and 10 area athletes advanced to next week’s individual regionals at Portage Northern.

Two wrestlers earned district championships. The top four at each weight class advanced.

West Ottawa’s Le’Anna Zavala won the title at 190 with a 7-2 decision. For Zavala, it was an even more historic day as she became the second female wrestler in Holland-area history to reach 100 career wins.

Her teammate Braelyn Sharda was fourth an also advanced.

Hamilton’s Korra Kapenga won the regional title at 125 with a pin 2:19 into the match against Hudsonville’s Sidney Eaton.

Zeeland West’s Emmaline Kouw finished runner-up at 120 and Hamilton’s Mykayla Provance took third as both qualified for next week’s regionals.

West Ottawa’s Kayla Shaft was second at 115 to advance. Hamilton’s Abbi Herhoven was third and Zeeland East’s Gabryella Revels was fourth as both advanced.

West Ottawa’s Evangeline Figueroa finished third at 235 to qualify for regionals. Teammate Nataiya Sikoulabout was fourth at 110 to advance.

Zeeland East’s Madison Bailey finished fourth at 145 to qualify.

Hamilton’s Alysaa Volkers nearly advanced, losing a tough 9-6 decision in the blood round.
