A second-half scoring drought and a barrage of 3-pointers by Elmhurst led to Hope College men’s basketball 71-66 loss on the road.
The Blue Jays made 10 3-pointers and took advantage of a several-minute drought late in the second half to earn the win at home on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
The Flying Dutchmen dropped to 1-2. Elmhurst (Ill.) improved to 1-0.
Hope’s defense kept the Flying Dutchmen in the game, holding the Blue Jays without a field goal for more than 7 minutes.
But the Flying Dutchmen went several minutes without scoring as well.
The Blue Jays snapped the field goal drought with a basket with 1:38 to go in the second half, putting them up 62-59.
Parker Hovey scored with 1:30 to go to pull Hope within 62-61 but the Jays answered with a 3-pointer by Luke Smith to go up 65-61 with 50 seconds remaining.
Hovey scored again but Elmhurst hit its free throws to seal the win.
Hovey had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Marcus Wourman added 15 points and five rebounds. Brandon Cargill had 12 and Kyle Blauch added 10 points and nine rebounds.
