Lansing State Journal moving offices to Marshall Street Armory

LANSING – The Lansing State Journal will relocate its offices in July, moving from downtown to leased space a short drive down Michigan Avenue at the Marshall Street Armory.

The LSJ has spent the past decade at the Knapp’s Centre at 300 S. Washington Square in downtown Lansing. Previously, the newspaper was headquartered in its own building for 65 years at the corner of Lenawee Street and Grand Avenue.

“After 10 years in one of Lansing’s historic downtown buildings, we’re excited to be moving into another historical landmark, The Marshall Street Armory,” LSJ Executive Editor Al Wilson said. “While the LSJ has been downtown for decades, we serve the entire region. The Armory best fit the needs we have for office space. Its central location off Michigan Avenue between the Capitol and MSU was key in our decision.”

The Armory, at 330 Marshall St. just south of Lansing Eastern High school, was home to the 119th Field Artillery of the Michigan National Guard for more than 80 years until the unit was decommissioned in 2007. The 37,000-square-foot building was used to host concerts, weddings, boxing matches and even circuses over the years.

Lansing developer Pat Gillespie bought the building in 2010, made wide-ranging renovations that kept the historical feel of the building and reopened it in 2012 with numerous office spaces and meeting rooms. The Armory is now home to several nonprofit organizations and is also the headquarters for Gillespie’s development firm, The Gillespie Group.

“For decades, both the Marshall Street Armory and the Lansing State Journal have stood as symbols of service, resilience, and community in Greater Lansing,” said Gillespie, who is founder and CEO of the Gillespie Group. “Bringing these two historic institutions together under one roof is a meaningful reminder that honoring our past can help inspire an even stronger future.”

The LSJ has occupied a portion of the third floor of the Knapp’s Centre, a former department store that is now commercial and residential space. The newspaper will maintain offices there through the first week of July.

The LSJ’s move-in date at the Armory is expected to be July 6. The newspaper’s new address will be Lansing State Journal, 330 Marshall St., Suite 201, Lansing, MI 48912.
