Lansing Christian's Maddox Mosley bounces back from injury with medalist finish

Maddox Mosley had big hopes for this spring in the Lansing Christian boys golf program.

The junior had goals of having an 18-hole average in the upper 70s and wanted to finish as the medalist at a few events.

But those hopes had to be tempered when Mosley broke his thumb after a basketball thrown at him hit the tip of his thumb prior to the start of the season.

That injury required Mosley to play with a splint on his thumb for a majority of the season and impacted his play.

“I didn’t play for three tournaments and then I ended up playing and shot not great,” Mosley said. “I was averaging low 40s. It wasn’t great.”

The split finally came off last week for Mosley. And he responded by delivering his best performance of the season and finishing as the medalist at a regional tournament while helping the Pilgrims claim the team title. Mosley, who was voted the LSJ boys high school athlete of the week, shot a career-low 73.

“It was kind of nice playing without (my splint) and then I played really good,” Mosley said.

Mosley was one of three Lansing Christian golfers to have rounds in the 70s in the regional to contribute to their team score of 309, which was the best by all Division 4 teams at the regional. His previous best score in an 18-hole round prior to the regional was 82.

“To shoot 73 at a very difficult Medalist Golf Course is really saying something,” Lansing Christian coach Jason Block said of Mosley. “Probably the biggest thing that he has just begun to learn as a lot of high school golfers do is it’s just not how far you can hit the ball. It’s how do I manage the golf course and be as smart as possible. He hit zero drivers at The Medalist. You’ve just got to manage the golf course.

“He hit irons off the tee and (was) just making wise decisions and just preparing.”

Mosley has a team-best 18-hole average of 82.3 after his strong regional performance. He is ready to build on his medalist finish and close his junior season strong now that he is healthy and playing a familiar course in Michigan State’s Forest Akers West for the state finals.

“I feel like it’s going to give us a really big advantage against the other teams because we go out and play there all the time,” Mosley said. “We kind of know the course like the back of our hand. We’ve put a lot of work in playing that course a lot and I think it’s going to pay off.”
