The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after an ambulance rollover crash involving a pickup truck driver, two emergency response employees and an en-route patient.
According to a release from ACSO, an ambulance was transporting a patient to Grand Rapids around 7 p.m. May 20 when the nearby driver of a pickup truck reportedly fell asleep and hit the back of the emergency vehicle, which lost control, fell into a ditch and rolled over.
A member of the ambulance team had been tending to the patient as the vehicle traveled northbound on US-131. Both members of the team were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The patient was transported to the hospital via helicopter with serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
Two hours beforehand, in Allendale Township, there was another incident involving a separate ambulance — according to a release from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. The ambulance was reportedly westbound with active lights and sirens on Lake Michigan Drive when it was struck by a 2013 Chevy Equinox while crossing an intersection at 48th Avenue.
In that crash, there were no injuries.
