Koy Detmer Jr. reveals his plan for Michigan QBs

Perhaps the most important hire for Michigan football this offseason, behind head coach Kyle Whittingham and offensive coordinator Jason Beck is quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. The former BYU quarterback is tasked with improving Bryce Underwood’s mechanics and decision-making, hoping to turn the former No. 1 overall recruit into the talent he was advertised as coming out of high school.

The Wolverines posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday of Detmer introducing himself to the maize and blue faithful. Within, he shared more about his coaching style and what he hopes to get out of the position group.

“My coaching style: energetic, passionate, enthusiastic,” Detmer said. “I really want our guys to be themselves. Each kid is coming into this program having done phenomenal things, their high school program or wherever they’ve been, and now when they come here to the University of Michigan, I want them to be able to be themselves, leave their stamp on it, and then myself be able to kind of evaluate and see where they’re at and then be able to kind of redefine their toolbox, so to speak. But really just be themselves and play football.”

Different quarterbacks coaches look for different things out of their talent, because each team has its own schematic style. Michigan isn’t exactly an air raid-style of attack, where it will be looking to consistently stretch the field in ways that perhaps other programs might. But that doesn’t mean that the coaching staff isn’t asking a lot out of Underwood and the other signal callers.

Detmer shared more about what he hopes to see, not just from Underwood, but all of the quarterbacks, noting that there are a lot of responsibilities that they heap upon those with the football in their hands every play.

“Some characteristics of the quarterback position that we’re looking for: they’ve got to be an excellent thrower with the football, they’ve got to be dependable with the football, a great decision maker,” Detmer said. “Play in and play out, we’re asking a lot of them both pre-snap and post-snap, and they’ve got to be a playmaker. At the end of the day, nothing’s going to be perfect, and they’ve got to be ready to make a play and help everyone else around them be better.”

Michigan is still undergoing summer conditioning with eyes on the season opener, coming up in 50 days.
