Kositchek's men's apparel store in downtown Lansing will not reopen

LANSING — Kositchek’s men’s apparel store in downtown Lansing will not reopen, the owners announced almost two years after a devastating storm damaged the company’s building.

The roof of the store at 113 N. Washington Square collapsed on July 9, 2024 after a severe storm and heavy rainfall.

In a letter dated June 2026, owner David Kositchek told customers the store would not reopen. The company’s website also notes the store is permanently closed with a short thank you to customers.

The business was started in 1865 by Henry Kositchek in Eaton Rapids. It moved to Lansing’s downtown in the late 1800s. The company also opened a store located in Okemos at Central Park Place in 1987, but closed it in 1993 to concentrate efforts on the Lansing location.

Kositchek’s is now owned by David Kositchek, great-grandson of the founder.

“The Kositchek family and team wish to thank our many friends and customers for the outpouring of support and encouragement throughout the past many months,” David Kositchek wrote in the letter to customers. “As a result of a 2024 severe weather occurrence, the building that housed Kositchek’s clothiers sustained devastating damage. After careful consideration, the difficult decision has been made not to reopen our business. Many heartfelt thanks to all that graced us with their presence since our founding in 1865. All who shopped with us were more than customers, you were friends.

“Thanks again for having been a Kositchek’s customer.”

“Our office will review each transaction and respond to your refund request. Please be sure to list your current contact information including phone, mail and email address. The processing of all requests will take time so we ask for your patience.”
