Kevin McGonigle is here to stay.
The Detroit Tigers and McGonigle agreed Wednesday, April 15, to an eight-year, $150 million contract extension.
The contract begins in 2027 and runs through 2034, covering his final five seasons of club control and buying out his first three seasons of free agency. The contract includes escalators in the final three seasons that could increase the total value to $160 million.
The deal includes a $14 million signing bonus.
“I’m loyal,” said McGonigle, a 21-year-old shortstop/third baseman who has played just 17 games in his MLB career. “I want to stick at one spot and help a team out to win a World Series in any year during the time I’m there. We agreed it was fair for both of us, and I know it’s the right move.”
The contract extension was negotiated by president of baseball operations Scott Harris (representing the Tigers) and agents Eric Izen and Greg Genske of Vayner Sports (representing McGonigle).
Harris first approached McGonigle about an extension opportunity during spring training.
It was a priority for the Tigers.
“Kevin is a special talent, and he’s a special person,” Harris said. “He has some rare gifts in the batter’s box, but what might be less obvious is he has the grit and the determination to be great – to get the absolute most out of these gifts.”
The annual salaries for McGonigle increase over time: $1 million in 2027, $7 million in 2028, $16 million in 2029, $21 million in 2030, $22 million in 2031 and $23 million per year from 2032-34. Escalators could increase those final three seasons to as much as $25 million in 2032, $26 million in 2033 and $28 million in 2034.
The contract also includes a $5 million assignment bonus each time McGonigle is traded.
But the Tigers have no plans to move him.
“This organization is better with Kevin in it, and we want to keep him here as long as we can possibly keep him here,” Harris said.
Had the Tigers not extended Kevin McGonigle, he would have reached free agency at age 27 after the 2031 season. Instead, the extension pushes his free agency to age 30 after the 2034 season.
Essentially, the Tigers secured three additional years of McGonigle’s prime in exchange for long-term financial security upfront.
McGonigle is happy to be in Detroit for a long time.
“I’m going to give it all I got every year of this contract,” McGonigle said. “I’m looking forward to it. I’m super excited for the city of Detroit. I’m happy to be a part of it. I’m looking to bring a World Series with a bunch of great teammates we have here.”

Kevin McGonigle contract details
Here’s the breakdown of McGonigle’s $150 million contract extension with the Tigers, from 2027-34:
“He’s already an incredible player,” Harris said, “but what we have seen since he has been a Tiger is that his work ethic, his grit, his determination, his competitiveness is how he is wired. He is hard-wired to be great and continue to get more out of these gifts. We expect that to continue. It’s one of the many reasons why we were so comfortable giving this contract extension to a player at such a young age.”
In 2026, McGonigle will continue to be paid a base salary of $780,000, which is the minimum salary – but he is set to receive the first $8 million of the $14 million signing bonus within 30 days of the MLB approving the contract, according to The Associated Press. (The other $6 million from the signing bonus will be paid March 31, 2028.)
Because the Tigers and McGonigle agreed to the contract extension after his MLB debut, the Tigers remain eligible for draft pick compensation through the Prospect Promotion Incentive.
The Tigers will get a draft pick if McGonigle wins American League Rookie of the Year in 2026 or finishes top three in AL MVP voting in 2027 or 2028.
These escalators can increase his salary by a total of $10 million across the final three seasons: $2 million for first place in MVP, $1 million for second through fifth place in MVP, $500,000 for six through 10th place in MVP, $500,000 for All-MLB first or second team, $250,000 for being elected or selected to the All-Star Game and $250,000 for winning Silver Slugger.
Kevin McGonigle stats with Tigers
Entering 2026, McGonigle had established himself as the consensus No. 2 prospect in baseball.
It didn’t take long for him to become the AL Rookie of the Year favorite.
He made the Opening Day roster out of spring training, skipping the Triple-A level. He immediately became the Tigers’ most productive hitter while shifting between shortstop and third base.
“Going into spring, I found out I had the opportunity to be in major-league camp,” McGonigle said. “I knew since then I had a shot to make this team and help this team win. Since then, I knew I could be a big part of this team. I’m just looking forward to helping this team for the next nine years.”
The Tigers moved McGonigle, a left-handed hitter, into the leadoff spot in the seventh game of the season.
McGonigle is hitting .311 (19-for-61) with one home run, 11 walks, eight strikeouts and a .909 OPS through 17 games, reaching base safely in each of his past 13 starts. He collected four hits March 26 in his MLB debut against the San Diego Padres and blasted his first home run Sunday against Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara.
He ranks among the best MLB hitters with a 12% whiff rate (97th percentile), 11.1% strikeout rate (95th percentile), 15.3% walk rate (85th percentile) and 24.5% chase rate (77th percentile). His 88.1 mph average exit velocity ranks in the 34th percentile, but his power production should improve as his strength develops.
McGonigle blends above-average swing decisions and elite bat-to-ball skills.
Here’s the best part: He’s only going to get better over the course of his nine seasons with the Tigers.
“A lot of the skills you’re seeing at the big-league level were evident at a young age,” Harris said.
Kevin McGonigle draft pick
Exactly 1,011 days ago, McGonigle joined the Tigers in the 2023 MLB Draft.
He was selected No. 37 overall out of Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. It was the first draft in Harris’ tenure as the president of baseball operations.
The Tigers hired Harris in September 2022.
In 2025, McGonigle reached Double-A Erie – hitting .254 with 12 home runs, 33 walks and 26 strikeouts across 46 games, registering a .919 OPS. He also hit .372 with a 1.110 OPS in 36 games for High-A West Michigan.
He never played in Triple-A Toledo before his MLB debut.
“When I first came to Detroit, and when I first talked to our fans in a setting like this, I outlined the three main tenets of this organization’s new vision,” Harris said. “We wanted to acquire, develop and retain young talent, we wanted to create a culture of development throughout the organization, and we wanted to dominate the strike zone on both sides of the ball. Today’s news lives at the intersection of those three goals.”
