It’s impossible to believe summer is already half over, but great opportunities for music, art and fun in metro Detroit continue. Here are just five options to kick off your weekend.
Kem on the river
Beloved hometown singer-songwriter Kem returns to Detroit’s Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre – on his birthday weekend – for two nights, Friday, July 25, and Saturday, July 26. The smooth, Detroit-born crooner, who left Motown this summer to revive his own Kemistry label, will be accompanied by celebrated R&B chanteuse Chanté Moore. Both shows begin at 8 p.m.

The Caped Crusader
Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) will accompany a special 35th anniversary screening of Tim Burton’s “Batman,” the 1989 classic that forever changed the landscape of adapting comic books to film. The DSO will play Danny Elfman’s iconic score live onstage during the movie. Tickets are selling quickly.

Hakuna matata!
“Batman” isn’t the only recent classic screening at Orchestra Hall this weekend: Disney’s 1994 animated treasure, “The Lion King,” will be shown while the orchestra accompanies live with Hans Zimmer’s Oscar-winning score.

An outdoor art fair
The Village of Rochester Hills shopping center will be transformed into an outdoor art gallery when it hosts the 21st annual Fine Art at the Village of Rochester Hills this Saturday and Sunday. The juried show curated by Village Fine Art Gallery, as directed by Donna Beaubien, brings together more than 70 artists from across the U.S. and features work in every media form. Live art demonstrations, children’s art activities, free entertainment and an outdoor food court will be on hand, and a July Easter egg hunt will be held.

A mother’s journey, through art
“Multiplier,” a new exhibition at Dearborn’s Padzieski Art Gallery, runs through Aug. 23. Curated by Amanda Koss, the show features diverse women artists exploring themes of biological journeys, emotional intricacies and the unique perspectives of women, including those who are not mothers or have experienced loss. Inspired by her own journey with motherhood, Koss has brought together powerful works that promise a deeply resonant experience.
