LANSING — Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of U.S. slavery, is June 19 and several events are happening across Greater Lansing.
The annual 517 Juneteenth Weekend is scheduled for June 18-21 in Lansing’s REO Town and some events for a separate Lansing Juneteenth Celebration already have taken place.
Here’s more to know about some main events happening in Lansing and elsewhere.
Lansing Juneteenth Celebration
The 33rd annual Lansing Juneteenth Celebration kicked off earlier this month at Lansing Community College.
Remaining activities include a 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18 essay/scholarship and art program at the Michigan Library and Historical Center, 702 W. Kalamazoo St., in Lansing.
A Juneteenth Flag Day event also is planned for 11 a.m. June 19 at Lansing City Hall, 124 W. Michigan Ave.
A Juneteenth Freedom Festival will happen 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. June 19 and 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. June 20 at St. Joseph Park, 2125 W. Hillsdale St.
517 Juneteenth Weekend
The 517 Juneteenth Weekend is scheduled to happen June 18-21.
Activities include a 6 p.m. June 18 seminar, “Healthy People Creating Healthy Communities,” at The Cadillac Room and a 4:30 p.m. June 19 ice cream social in The Riverview Church parking lot. Both locations share the same 1115 S. Washington Ave. address. The seminar is requesting an RSVP.
A main event festival will happen 3:30 to 11:00 p.m. June 20 in REO Town, featuring live music, vendors, a food court, Kidz Zone and more.
A Father’s Day Jazz Night featuring Horn & Holland will close out the weekend at 6 p.m. June 21 at The Cadillac Room.
Other events
June 16: Delta Township is hosting a Unity Fest at Sharp Park, 1401 Elmwood Road, at 6 p.m. Art, live music, empowerment, storytelling and community are planned.
