Joe Muer, not an Andiamo, will be flagship restaurant at new Marriott

A Detroit name in restaurants that goes back decades, Joe Muer will be the flagship restaurant at the JW Marriott Detroit Water Square when it opens in early 2027.

Named Joe Muer Seafood + Chops, the restaurant will have the seafood dishes it is known for and also prime steaks. The large space will run parallel to the Detroit Riverwalk and seat 220. There are also private dining spaces of various sizes and a chef’s table.

The Joe Vicari Restaurant Group announced in October that an Andiamo Italian Chophouse would be the anchor restaurant at the 25-story, 600-room waterfront hotel. That plan has changed in favor of putting a Joe Muer Seafood + Chops there instead.

“To meet growing customer demand, Joe Muer Seafood + Chops will continue to prominently feature fresh seafood from around the globe along with an expanded selection of prime and Wagyu steaks, and other new, exciting offerings,” said Joe Vicari in a statement. “We are proud to be part of the new JW Marriott Detroit Water Square and to introduce the legendary Joe Muer Seafood to a new generation of diners through this remarkable waterfront development.”

The new Joe Muer will be led by executive chef Najwa Mansour, a longtime employee with the restaurant group. The interior is being designed by Colin Tury of Tury Design, which has also done work at new area restaurants like Vecino, Lola’s Taco Bar and Bar Gabi.

“An icon, reimagined — we’re excited to welcome the legendary Joe Muer brand to JW Marriott Detroit Water Square,” said hotel general manager Joleisha Bradley in a press release announcing the news. “Together, we’re shaping a premier luxury destination that reflects the energy and renewal of Detroit’s waterfront.”

The Joe Muer name dates back to 1928. Vicari, who is known for his many Andiamo Italian restaurants, bought the Joe Muer brand, its intellectual properties and recipes in the 2010s. Vicari resuscitated Joe Muer Seafood in 2011 with a riverfront destination in the Renaissance Center, which will remain open for the time being.

There’s also a Joe Muer Seafood at 39475 Woodward in Bloomfield Hills.
