Jefferson wins boys team, and girls individual titles at home cross country meet

NEWPORT ― Jefferson kept a lot of the trophies at home.

The Bears won the Division 2 boys championship and the girls were second, but had the individual champion in Claire Miller during the 41st running of the Jefferson Invitational Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20.

The boys were runaway winners, finishing with 29 points to 64 for runner-up Grosse Ile. Dundee (79) and Flat Rock (109) were third and fourth.

All five Jefferson runners were in the top 10 as Mason Tulik, Gabe Busen, Luke Masserant, Carter Lee and Jonah Busen went 3-4-5-7-10.

Dundee runners of Mason Edelbrock, Ethan Eby, Tucker Cory and Alex Tremonti went 9-15-16-17 and Flat Rock placed Calvin Hadamacker, Dario Barella and Graham Turner 11-13-18.

Jefferson’s girls scored 50 points, 6 behind Grosse Ile. Dundee finished third with 54.

Miller won in 20:11.96 and teammates Randee Mulherin, Jessie Cole and Kensley Wilburn ran 3-10-13.

Dundee was led by Lydia Richards (6), Addison Ringbloom (8), Maria Lora Hernandez (14) and Gabriella Hovey (15). Kayle Babowicz was 17th for Flat Rock.

Summerfield won Division 3-4 girls with 51 points, three better than Whiteford.

Makenzie Wolfe (6), Allison Ost (7), Grace Raymond (11) and Abby Raymond (12) led the Bulldogs.

Whiteford’s Braelynn Chiotti was third and teammates Briar Wing, Molly Fojtik, Sierra DeBarr and Rory Vida 10-15-20-21. Ida placed Brynn Lusky, Ryleigh Rowe and Camilla Mommerency 9-17-19.

Harper Childress and Remy Steves of the Monroe Milers ran 14-16.

Luke Stanley of Ida was sixth and Whiteford’s Grant Rasor seventh for Division 3-4 boys.

Colton Childress and Freeman Spencer of the Monroe Milers ran 11-14, Collin Brown of Summerfield 18 and Ida’s Cameron Cogan 20.

Anna Coury and Zoey Smalling finished 16-17 for Monroe in Division 1 girls.

SATURDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Riley England, Erie Mason: Won the junior-senior race to help Mason win the girls overall championship in the Pittsford Invitational. Lexi Colburn and Grace Albright were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the junior-senior race and Kate Otting-Jaelynn Horton were 3-5 for freshman sophomore girls.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Caleb Healey, Erie Mason: Was the freshman-sophomore champion as the Eagles won the Pittsford Invitational. Joseph Colaluca, David Mills and Porter Ravary were 2-4-7 for junior-senior boys and Weston Albright third in the freshman-sophomore race.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Sophia Smith, Monroe: Won the 100-yard freestyle and took second in the 50 at the Belleville Tiger Relays. Others winning individual medals were Abby Dieckmann, Nikki Rykse, Emma Boyd, Aurora Bredschneider, Delani Willey and Madison Mahoney. Top placers for St. Mary Catholic Central were Katelyn Rutkowski and Genavieve Bylow.

THURSDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS

VOLLEYBALL

Zoie Stubleski, Erie Mason: Recorded 8 kills and 8 digs during a 25-9, 25-8, 25-12 win over Britton Deerfield. Jayanna Willets also had 8 digs and Addie Homrich 3 blocks for the 10-5 Eagles.

Maya Stone, Summerfield: Served 12 points, including 3 aces, and led the defense with 21 digs in a triumph over Sand Creek. Riley Soldwish logged 25 assists, Bethany Suydam 13 digs, 7 points and 3 aces, Jaeli Jones 8 kills and Bridget Salenbien 7 kills for the 7-3 Bulldogs.

Kailee LaVoy, Whiteford: Put away 12 kills as the Bobcats beat Pinckney 25-17, 25-22 and lost to Manchester 26-24, 25-22. Other standouts were Bailey Spradling (15 digs, 8 kills, 7 aces) and Addeson Cousino (24 assists).

Addison Burgei, Gibraltar Carlson: Hit .467 with 8 kills as Carlson came back after dropping the first set to beat Taylor 21-25, 25-19, 25-7, 25-12. Emma Ferguson added 7 kills and 8 assists and Angela Sandoval led with 10 digs.

BOYS SOCCER

Jacob Baker, State Line Christian: Netted a hat trick during a 9-1 victory over Monclova Christian Academy. Treyson Heaton and Austin Nowak each scored twice for the 6-3-1 Patriots, who have won four games in a row.

Mac Mlotha, Flat Rock: Scored the only goal on a penalty kick during a 1-0 victory over Southgate Anderson.

Marton Krajcz, New Boston Huron: Produced a goal as Huron (No. 3 in Division 2) tied Pontiac Notre Dame (No. 2 Division 3) 1-1. Ian Ankenbauer was strong in net and Ryan Biller and Matthew Hussey played well.

Aaron Fowkes and Carson Walker, SMCC: Each notched a goal and an assist as the Falcons stretched their winning streak to three games with a 4-1 verdict over Lenawee Christian. Joeseph Lajiness and Brennen Menzies scored the other goals.

Jaxon Bolster, Ida: Logged three goals and an assist in a 4-1 victory over Gibraltar Carlson. Brandon Commet had the other goal. “Ida played well throughout, controlling the ball,” Ida coach Tim Allen said. Noah Jasso scored for 6-4-1 Carlson.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Sophia Smith, Monroe: Posted a personal best in the butterfly and hit a MISCA qualifying time in the 100 freestyle during a 148-35 loss to Saline. Abby Dieckmann and Aubrey Nutt also hit personal bests and Delani Willey, Ana Bredschneider, Emma Boyd and Emerson Gruber swam well.

Lilly Landolt, Samantha Smith and Izzy Rischman, Bedford: Won individual races during a 109-76 loss to Chelsea. Camille Hansen, Sydney Ridner, Kat Wachowiak, Lindsey Andrews, Adeline Griner, Coelie Holzemer, Annabelle James, Ashlyn Williams, Kendra Bland all swam personal bests.

BOYS TENNIS

Zach Farmer and Matt Fink, Milan: Posted a 6-0-,6-0 win at No. 1 doubles during an 8-0 shutout of Riverview after rallying from a set down to win against Ypsilanti Wednesday. Will Kliber-Gavin Aikey and Noah Thornton-Henry Kliber also had perfect scores against Riverview and singles players Drew Biederman and Carter Smith gave up just one game.

GIRLS GOLF

Lily Lewandowski, Bedford: Shot 49 for her best round of the season as the Mules shot (210) to finish between Ann Arbor Pioneer (184) and Jackson (235) in a Southeastern Conference tri-meet. Stella Clark also shot a season-low 52 and Abby Kirk added a 53.
