Jameson Williams cost the Detroit Lions a point – and the lead – in the second quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Nov. 16.
The Lions struggled early to get things going on offensem but Williams finally broke things open with a 34-yard catch-and-run for the game’s first touchdown, tying it at 6-6.
Williams showed off the blazing speed that makes him one of the most dangerous weapons in the league. And just seconds after, he showed why he’s also one of the most frustrating players in the league, too.
After scoring the touchdown, Williams ran right to the goalpost and held onto it like a frog.
Funny? Yes.
Costly? Also yes.
Using the goalpost as part of a celebration is an automatic 15-yard penalty, part of a rule to stop dunking celebrations that have messed up the alignment of the goalposts.
Williams’ penalty moved the Lions back 15 yards on the extra point on an extremely windy night in Philadelphia; Lions kicker Jake Bates then missed the extra point by a wide margin.
The miss meant the Lions and Eagles were still tied, 6-6, and appeared to flip the momentum a bit too, as the Eagles marched down the field on the following drive and eventually scored on a “tush push” from Jalen Hurts.
Do you think the play cost the Lions a point?
Or does it ultimately fall on Bates to make the kick.
