Jake Butt sings praises of Michigan offense, Bryce Underwood, upon seeing practice

Bryce Underwood may be outspoken in his moxie, but even when he’s not sharing his lofty goals, others will sing his praises for him.

On Friday, it was former Michigan tight end Jake Butt, who was on campus with the Big Ten Network to catch the Wolverines’ practice. Discussing what he saw, Butt was effusive in his praise, not only of Underwood and his passing ability, but also of the offense as a whole.

“The ball jumps out of his hand with great velocity, but sometimes quarterbacks throw a hard ball, and it’s hard to catch,” Butt said. “He throws with great velocity, but it’s still a very catchable football. He can cover the entire field. There’s not a throw that Chip Lindsey is going to ask of him that he can’t make. But it’s really the mental side.

“And just walking around, I know some of the guys on the team. I mean, Max Bredeson pulled me aside. He said, ‘How good is our quarterback right here? That guy doesn’t miss.’ So I think that says a lot, that he’s earned the belief of his teammates.

“But it’s not just Bryce. The wide receiver room should improve. The offensive line at this point should improve. Chip Lindsey, with his experience, should improve. So it’s all the other pieces around him that are going to unlock his potential.”

Fans will get an opportunity to see the new-look Michigan Wolverines in just over a week, with the season opener set for August 30 against New Mexico at The Big House.
