MILFORD — Kaitlyn Berg, 27, died last year after a 14-year battle with brain tumors, but her family is keeping her memory, and her fight, alive with a new fundraising event.
The inaugural “A Taste of Milford,” is set for 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on June 6, and is a foodie’s dream tour, with a dozen potential stops to sample culinary delights and tasty treats and beverages. All proceeds from the event will benefit the American Brain Tumor Association.
“We would love people to experience the food and drinks and sweets tour in the town of Milford,” said Larry Berg, Kaitlyn’s father. “If you are looking for a tasty day out, we’ve got you covered. This food, drinks, and sweets crawl is about tasting new flavors, discovering hidden gems and supporting local businesses.”
For $55.75, a package of eight tickets can be purchased to use at participating shops and restaurants, including Anna’s House, Baker’s of Milford, Beyond Juicery, Black Label Tavern, Novella’s Pizza Milford, River’s Edge Brewing Co., Sayulita Cocina Mexicana, Sedo’s Premium Ice Cream, Smoke Street, Sweet Retreats Chocolate Shoppe, The Proving Grounds Coffee & Ice Cream, and Wardell Manor Family Farm.
The tickets include three for food samples, three for drink samples and two for sweet treats. Berg said examples of what they may be used for include a Waygu slider, steak and cheese eggroll, chocolates, ice cream, samplers of beer or wine, various mocktails and smoothies.
“A Taste of Milford” participants may also want to consider burning some of those calories beforehand by joining the Breakthrough for Brain Tumors 5K (BT5K), with registration at 8 a.m., June 6 in Kensington Metropark, and a race start time at 9 a.m. Cost is $45 for those 13 and over or $25 for kids 12 and under, and includes a shirt and medal. For just a few dollars more, a drink and doughnut is included.
Berg and his wife Lynn, Pinckney residents, brought the BT5K to Michigan 14 years ago when their daughter Kaitlyn, then 13, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She endured many surgeries, clinical trials, chemotherapy and radiation over the years, but graduated from Novi High School and Grand Valley State University and traveled the world, visiting Patagonia, Chile, Peru, Argentina, the Galapagos, and even working at an elephant sanctuary in Thailand.
“She did that all on her own, she was a warrior,” Berg recalled. “It scared us to death, but she was brave in more ways than one.”
