How often should you rotate your tires? What drivers need to know

While most drivers tend to stay on top of regular maintenance, there are a few important procedures they may overlook. Getting an oil change is unavoidable and most modern cars give the driver a warning when their oil life percentage is low. But for something like a tire rotation, there is no notification from the vehicle so you will have to stay on top of it yourself.

Tire rotations should be done as often as you change your oil. Not only will it help extend the lifespan of your tires, it will also help your suspension last longer. Here is why you should get your tires rotated and how often you need this done:

What is a tire rotation?

When a car has its tires rotated, each wheel is removed and swapped around. For the average car, the front tires are moved to the rear while the rear tires are moved to the front. For cars with wider rear tires, the left and right rear tires will be swapped for one another while the left and right front tires will be swapped.

What are the benefits of tire rotations?

One of the most important benefits of regular tire rotations is your tires will wear more evenly. If they aren’t rotated properly, they will wear unevenly and degrade faster than they normally would. Having tires that are rotated often will also mean less stress on your vehicle’s suspension components. With the car riding with even tread, it will be better balanced and will cause less wear to your key suspension components.

How often should I get my tires rotated?

According to manufacturer Nokian Tyres, it’s best to get your tires rotated every 4,000 to 8,000 miles. Some dealerships do a tire rotation during the same appointment as an oil change for an extra cost. If it has been a while since your last rotation, make sure you get one as soon as possible.

Where can I get my tires rotated?

Most areas have a few different places that offer tire rotations. One of the most common is car dealerships. Even though they may be a bit pricier, they at least know what they are doing. You can also get a rotation at most shops that sell and install tires. Other auto mechanic shops may offer to do tire rotations.

The average tire rotation cost

The average cost of a rotation is $60 to $72 according to Kelly Blue Book. Prices can vary depending on the type of shop and the type of vehicle. If you plan to get a rotation along with tire balancing, expect to pay over $100. This balancing service corrects the weight distribution of the tire and reduces vibrations from the road while driving.

While the average tire is expected to reach 50,000 miles by most manufacturers, many tires don’t make it there. With consistent rotations, you can extend the life of your tires so you can drive comfortably and safely until you need a new pair.
