A storm system dropping heavy snow over parts of the Upper Peninsula, and prompting multiple warnings and advisories statewide, is expected to let up by Friday, but another system could impact areas of the state heading into the weekend.

“Looking ahead, another system is expected to impact the region Saturday (Nov. 29) into early Sunday (Nov. 30) with a likelihood of accumulating snow,” the National Weather Service office for Northern Indiana said on X on Nov. 26. “Uncertainties remain with precip(itation) types later Saturday night that will affect amounts and extent of impacts.”

Portions of the Upper Peninsula are under a blizzard warning Nov. 26 because of wind gusts up to 55 mph blowing snow — up to 30 inches — through Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27. Snow is expected to fall 1-2 inches per hour Nov. 26, according to the Marquette NWS office.

“A fairly intense cyclone supported by a digging upper-level trough is bringing the first significant snowfall of the season across the northern tier states culminated with blizzard conditions as cold air rushes in behind the deep storm,” the National Weather Service said. “This cyclone is forecast to continue its eastward track across the Great Lakes while expanding in size for the remainder of today into tonight.”

Early reports from the UP storm say 14 inches is on the ground in Hurley, Wisconsin, on Michigan’s western border.

“For the remainder of the Great Lakes, rain will gradually change over to all snow by Thanksgiving morning (Nov. 27) along with windy conditions,” said the National Weather Service.

Snow is expected to taper off by Friday, Nov. 28, then pick up again over the weekend as weather officials predict the polar vortex will affect the state.

“The next significant winter storm is on the horizon for portions of the Northern Plains through the Midwest and Great Lakes beginning Friday through the weekend. Stay tuned for the latest updates from WPC and your local National Weather Service offices over the coming days,” the National Weather Service said on X on Nov. 26.

From Thanksgiving Day through Sunday, Nov. 30, temperatures in the Lower Peninsula are expected to range in the 30s, with northern areas seeing cooler highs in the 20s.

In the UP, temperatures will range in the 20s-30s, dropping to as low as below zero in spots this weekend. On Sunday, Ironwood, on the Michigan border with Wisconsin, is expected to see a high of 21 degrees with a low of minus-2 degrees.

Weather officials urge residents to stay updated as the winter storm gets underway during a high-traffic week, “if you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” said the NWS.
