This Grosse Pointe North High School graduate is now among the winningest contestants in “Jeopardy!” history.
Who is Jamie Ding? Correct!
Ding, a bureaucrat and law student now residing in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, is a 2009 graduate of Grosse Pointe North High, the Grosse Pointe News reported.
On Thursday’s episode, he won his 10th straight game, making him just the 20th contestant to reach double digits in wins, according to The Jeopardy! Fan, an extensive online database of “Jeopardy!” statistics.
Coming into Thursday’s episode, Ding had won $245,802 on the game show by providing a total of 273 correct responses, compared to 17 incorrect responses, according to The Jeopardy! Fan.
On Thursday, he won another $27,008, according to Parade, giving him a total of $272,810 in winnings. In the Final Jeopardy! round he correctly identified which company was founded in northern Minnesota in 1902 with the sole goal of mining for corundum. (The correct answer: What is 3M?)
For years, “Jeopardy!” limited returning winners to five episodes. The show changed its rules in 2003 to allow contestants to continue their streaks until they lose.
Ken Jennings, who now hosts the long-running program, remains the show’s top competitor with a 74-game win streak that earned him more than $2.5 million, according to The Jeopardy! Fan. (He then won another $1.8 million in special tournaments.)
Ding’s trivial prowess dates back to his time at Grosse Pointe North. In 2009, he finished fourth in the National Academic Quiz Tournaments’ high school championship. He was also an honor student, a National AP Scholar and an award-winning member of the school band and orchestra, according to past editions of the Grosse Pointe News.
Earlier, during his time at Parcells Middle School, Ding was a two-time state geography bee champion, the Grosse Pointe News reported.
He’ll next appear on “Jeopardy!” on Friday.
