General Motors’ electric vehicle manufacturing plant Factory Zero, in Detroit-Hamtramck, will partially shut down first- and second-shift production temporarily beginning Sept. 2, the company told employees Aug. 27 in a memo obtained by the Detroit Free Press.
Production of the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ will be impacted, the company confirmed.
Production is slated to stop the day after Labor Day and resume Oct. 6. Meanwhile, the temporary layoff in place for second-shift production also is going to be extended until Oct. 6. The move impacts approximately 360 employees.
“Factory Zero is making temporary adjustments to production to align to market dynamics,” GM spokesman Kevin Kelly said in an emailed statement. “General Motors updates schedules as part of our standard process of aligning production to manage vehicle inventory.”
GM said on April 10 that it was temporarily cutting approximately 200 jobs at its Factory Zero Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center, citing market conditions for purchases of the GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV and Sierra EV truck, Chevrolet Silverado EV truck and Cadillac Escalade IQ EV SUV. The new shift change impacts 160 more employees.
Factory Zero employs about 4,000 people, according to the company.
Impacted employees will be placed on a temporary layoff and may be eligible for subpay and benefits in accordance with the GM-UAW national contract, GM said.
