Fried apple pies returning to McDonald’s after decades off menu

Fans of McDonald’s fried apple pies, gone for decades from its menu, are in for a treat.

McDonald’s is bringing back the fried apple pies as a nod to America’s upcoming 250th birthday. Starting June 23, the fried pies will be available at participating locations and on the menu all day long. Prices vary but are $1.99 for one pie or $2.99 for two.

First introduced in the 1960s, McDonald’s fried apple pie features a classic apple filling surrounded by a crispy, crunchy, and sometimes bubbled crust in spots.

It was 1992 when McDonald’s last offered the pie at its U.S. locations, according to the fast-food giant, and replaced it with a baked version. However, some locations in Hawaii have continued to serve the fried version of the pies, a Honolulu Magazine article first published in 2019 notes, thanks to customer demand.

While the fried apple pie has been gone for more than 30 years, McDonald’s notes it’s still available as a permanent menu item in some international markets, including Mexico, Greece and China.

One good thing to note about McDonald’s apple pie is that there is a good chance that some have Michigan-grown apples. As a nationwide top producer of apples, McDonald’s sources plenty of apples from Michigan growers. In 2023, according to McDonald’s, 28,708,000 pounds of Michigan apples went into the McDonald’s system.

McDonald’s is also honoring the fried pie at a new mile marker – a 35-foot fried apple pie – on the famed Route 66. You can find the giant fried pie at 920 N. Broadway St. in Joliet, Illinois, which is just outside Chicago, where McDonald’s headquarters are. Fans can also pick up a souvenir road map detailing McDonald’s facts and five iconic McDonald’s along Route 66.

On June 23, McDonald’s is kicking off the return of the fried pie, debuting the largest fried apple pie in Chicago from 3:30-6 p.m. Central Time, with live music and Coca-Cola, while dishing out complimentary Arch Cards.
