Four downs from Haslett football's 20-12 road win at Fowlerville

Here are four downs from Haslett football’s 20-12 road victory over Fowlerville in a pivotal CAAC Red matchup.

Player of the game

Haslett wide receiver and defensive back JonQuavion Thomas: Thomas hauled in a 55-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to put Haslett on the board and added a three-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Thomas also had two key pass breakups on Fowlerville’s final drive, including on fourth down to essentially ice the game.

Key moment

Heading into the fourth quarter, Haslett trailed 12-7, and its star running back Korey Amachree had been relatively contained by the Gladiator defense. The fourth quarter was a different story, as the senior Amachree broke free for a 64-yard touchdown on the second play of the quarter to regain the lead for Haslett.

What it means

Haslett improves to 4-1 and 3-0 in the CAAC Red, setting up a showdown with undefeated Williamston next week that could ultimately determine who wins the league. Amachree had a big fourth quarter, but the role players like Thomas and running back Cornelius Malone had solid games as well. Haslett’s defense is strong, led by junior Asher Newman, who had multiple sacks on the evening.

Fowlerville hung tough and had a couple long drives end in fourth down failures. Gladiators quarterback Sam Shrader can sling it, but looks hobbled in the second half, and that was ultimately too much for the Gladiators offense to overcome on the final drive.

Quotable

“I feel like we came together as a team, and we had to stay focused and stick to our roles to get the win and that’s what we did. I’m happy I was able to come through for my team in those key plays and I trusted my technique.” – Haslett wide receiver JonQuavion Thomas.
