Former MSU forward Jaxon Kohler part of injunction for extra year of eligibility

Could Michigan State basketball be looking at another year with forward Jaxon Kohler? That apparently is a possibility.

Reports came out on Friday afternoon the former Spartan is one of a few players included in an injunction in California on behalf of players from the high school class of 2022 looking for a fifth year of eligibility. This injunction comes on the heels of the NCAA recently passing a new rule that gives players five years of eligibility across five years (i.e. the five in five rule). Players like Kohler were not grandfathered into this new rule, meaning their careers came to an end this past season — but this latest injunction, if granted, would provide one more year of eligibility for the upcoming season.

Kohler wrapped up his four-year career with the Spartans this past season, averaging 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game to help lead Michigan State to the Sweet 16. He was not selected in the 2026 NBA Draft but is currently competing with the Utah Jazz in the NBA Summer League.

Should this injunction be passed, it would be interesting to see how things play out from there. It’s unclear if Kohler would automatically be welcomed back to the Spartans and be part of their roster next year as there could be current roster constraints that prevent him returning. It’s also unclear if he would be able to hit the transfer portal and look for a new team given the fact that this would be done after the portal has closed.

While there’s a lot unclear about this current situation, we do at least know there’s a chance Kohler could be suiting up again for the Spartans next season. We will just have to monitor the situation from here to see if that actually comes into fruition or not.
