Extreme heat warning issued for Lansing area

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for all of the Lansing area and much of Lower Michigan for the first four days of the work week.

The weather service said the warning is in effect for Eaton, Clinton and Ingham counties beginning at 2 p.m. Monday, June 29 until 8 p.m. Thursday, July 2.

Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 105 degrees are expected for portions of central, south central, southwest and west central Michigan, the NWS said in an online alert.

“Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events,” the weather service said. “Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.”

The announcement came shortly before Lansing Mayor Andy Schor announced he is activating the city’s extreme heat weather plan effective from 8 a.m. Monday to 8 p.m. Thursday.

The city under the plan will open cooling centers for area residents and additional daytime shelter space for people who are living on the streets.

Monday’s temperature is forecast at 92 degrees, according to Accuweather, with a real feel temperature of 99. Overnight lows are expected to remain in the 70s until Thursday night and then cool into the weekend.

On Tuesday, mercury is expected to hit 96 and feel like 104 degrees.

Wednesday’s high is expected to be 99, and feel like 105.

Thursday’s high is forecast at 96, with temperatures feeling like 105.

Some relief comes Friday, with a high of 93 and a real feel temperature of 97, before temperatures dip into the 80s for the weekend and the first full week of July.
