In its breakdown of the NFC North, ESPN took a look at the Detroit Lions’ offseason.
ESPN dissected the Lions’ most underrated move and the move that will have the biggest impact on the 2026 season.
ESPN also shared its thoughts on the Lions’ most surprising offseason moves.
Under GM Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell, the identity of the Lions has been built on grit and loyalty. So, it was surprising to see the organization part ways with veteran offensive tackle Taylor Decker, who was the team’s longest-tenured player, as well as releasing offensive lineman Graham Glasgow in March to save $5.6 million against the salary cap. Veteran running back David Montgomery was also traded to the Houston Texans in exchange for O-lineman Juice Scruggs, a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick. These moves were surprising because Decker, Glasgow and Montgomery all played key roles on offense over the past few seasons. – ESPN
For diehard Lions fans, none of these moves were particularly shocking. Detroit needed some financial flexibility and cap relief, which it got by releasing both Taylor Decker and Graham Glasgow.
David Montgomery’s frustrations with a diminishing workload were well documented, and the Lions needed to find some offensive line depth. The Decker and Glasgow moves made the Juice Scruggs acquisition all the more important.
But, the Decker saga did make his release at least somewhat surprising. Decker announced his intention to return and then was released just days later.
It’s surprising to some degree to see the changing of the guard in real time, but after a disappointing 9-8 finish last season, the Lions had to shuffle up the deck in some regard.
