Erie Township crash leaves six in critical condition

ERIE TOWNSHIP, MI — Six people are in critical condition following a crash at the corner of South Dixie Highway and Luna Pier Road Thursday, June 26.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department said prior to the crash, the Erie Township Police conducted a traffic stop on a white 2013 Ford Focus near the intersection of Suder and Dean roads for careless driving. After the Focus stopped, the officer approached it to make contact with the driver. While doing so, the Focus fled the traffic stop. The officer gave chase but terminated the pursuit because the Focus was driving recklessly.

After fleeing from the officer, the Focus was northbound on South Dixie Highway. As it entered the intersection of Luna Pier Road, the driver disregarded the red traffic signal and struck a gray 2012 Ford Focus about 2:25 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

There were four people in the white 2013 Focus and two in the gray 2012 Focus. All six were transported to Toledo area hospitals, where the sheriff’s office reported they are listed in critical condition. Airbags in both Fords deployed at the time of the crash. Seatbelt use is unknown.
