Elliot Cadeau indicates he's staying at Michigan: 'I bleed blue'

It appears starting point guard Elliot Cadeau is sticking with the Wolverines.

Cadeau indicated his intention to stay at Michigan following coach Dusty May’s NBA departure in an Instagram post on Thursday night.

“I bleed blue #HAILTHEVICTORS,” Cadeau wrote under an image of him celebrating during a win over Michigan State last season, with “home” set as the location of the post.

Cadeau’s announcement comes three days after May agreed to become the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks and two days after assistant coach Mike Boynton Jr. was named Michigan’s interim head coach.

Due to the coaching change, the transfer portal will open to Michigan players for a 15-day period beginning 31 days after May’s departure or five days after a permanent head coach is announced. Since Boynton’s promotion, the focus has been on retaining what’s viewed as a top-10 roster.

For Cadeau, it’s the third time this offseason he has announced he’s returning for his senior season and a second year at Michigan. In April, he announced he’d be back after agreeing to a new deal for the 2026-27 campaign. A month later, after he opted to go through the pre-draft process to gather feedback, he solidified his return when he withdrew from the NBA Draft.

That seemed to be the end of it until May’s abrupt exit. Regardless, it appears Cadeau — the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player who averaged a career-high 10.5 points and team-best 5.9 assists last season — is set to be back after helping lead the Wolverines to their first national title since 1989.

Earlier this week, sophomore guard Trey McKenney told The Detroit News that he doesn’t plan on going elsewhere, and he reaffirmed that stance with a social media post that read: “Victors always stay #HA1L #GoBlue.”

That’s positive news for the Wolverines, considering Cadeau and McKenney are expected to form one of the top starting backcourts in the Big Ten next season. With two critical pieces seemingly in place, Boynton and Michigan’s staff will look to keep the rest of the roster intact.
