A driver was injured after crashing into an Oakland County Sheriff’s patrol car last week, officials said.
Deputies investigating a separate incident on westbound M-59 between Crooks and Adams roads around 2:30 a.m. Friday positioned their patrol car to block traffic, the sheriff’s office said. The vehicle had its emergency lights activated.
A 2018 Chevrolet Impala hit the car, which was unoccupied, according to authorities.
At the time of the crash, officers were several yards away from the patrol vehicle and were not injured.
The driver was transported to the hospital. The 27-year-old Waterford Township man was last listed in critical condition, sheriff’s officials said.
Police said it has not been determined whether alcohol, drugs or excessive speed were factors in the crash.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard encouraged drivers to abide by Michigan’s Move Over Law.
“I cannot overstate the safety and legal need to follow the law and move over one lane away from any stopped emergency vehicle,” he said in a statement. “These crashes are too common and often deadly. Please pay attention, slow down and move over.”
